While at Sakura TV, a cameraman named Hirokazu Ukita listens to the audio tape that is being broadcast on Sakura TV and dies. This makes the Kira task force realize that Kira no longer needs names, but faces to kill. The task force then realizes that the person behind the broadcast has to be another Kira. Meanwhile, Light Yagami decides he is getting involved with the investigation to gather information on "L". He introduces himself as 'Ryuzaki' and says he will help L find his next target. At the end of the episode, young Misa Amane discusses her admiration for 'Kira' with a shinigami named Rem, who tells her she may have Shinigami eyes if she has made a deal with one of them before.

Later, in an anime-only scene featuring Misa Amane and Rem, it is revealed that Misa used her Shinigami eyes to trade for hers and Light's lifespan in exchange for serving as Kira's agent.
Something is afoot in the investigation, with L suspecting a new Kira and Light trying to manipulate the situation to get closer to L. Meanwhile, Misa Amane reveals that she has shinigami eyes, and will follow her Shinigami Rem's instructions in order to meet Kira.
Light's fellow college student, Naomi Misora, has left her engagement ring in a hotel room, where a man is murdered. With nothing to tie her to the murder except the ring, she goes on the run. While investigating the murder, Light finds himself being watched by L and joins the Kira investigation task force.
