Death Note was adapted into a series of live-action films in Japan, originally released in three parts in summer 2006 with the last two parts airing back-to-back on June 17, 2006. A miniseries, titled Death Note: New Generation, and an American film adaptation were released in 2016. An anime television series adaptation aired 37 episodes in Japan from October 3, 2006, to June 26, 2007. Composed of 37 episodes, the anime was developed by Madhouse and directed by Tetsurō Araki. The episodes were broadcast on Nippon Television, with the first episode premiering on October 3, 2006 and the final episode airing on June 26, 2007.

Published in English by VIZ Media, the series has sold over 30 million copies in Japan and the United States. Death Note is listed as the seventh best-selling manga series of all time. The work won the 2003 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga and was also adapted into a live-action film franchise with 3 films, a television drama and television series episodes.

He discovers the Death Note, a notebook that belongs to the Shinigami named Ryuk that grants him the ability to kill anyone he wants simply by writing their names.
